Fourth-Quarter Push Lifts Lander Past Middle Georgia in PBC Play

GREENWOOD - Lander continued its climb in the Peach Belt Conference standings Saturday afternoon, using a strong fourth-quarter push to defeat Middle Georgia 69-63 at home and extend its winning streak to three games.

The Bearcats (6-10, 4-5 PBC) knocked off a Middle Georgia squad that entered the contest on a two-game winning streak and near the top of the league standings, most recently defeating previously unbeaten North Georgia in conference play. Despite trailing for much of the afternoon, Lander delivered its best stretch of basketball when it mattered most, outscoring the Knights late to secure the conference victory.

Middle Georgia (12-4, 5-4 PBC) controlled the tempo early and built a 10-point lead in the second quarter, taking a 19-9 advantage before Lander chipped away to keep the game within reach. The Knights carried a narrow one-point lead into the final period and grabbed their last lead at 47-46 with 9:35 remaining in the fourth quarter.

From there, Lander responded with a decisive run sparked by perimeter shooting and relentless work on the offensive glass. The Bearcats stretched their lead to 65-56 with just over two minutes remaining and closed the game at the free-throw line.

Quadaija Langley led all scorers with 21 points, knocking down three three-pointers and adding four steals to spark Lander on both ends of the floor. Alindria Dudley finished with 13 points, while Serenity Echols and Lauren Crosland chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively, as the Bearcats placed four players in double figures.

Lander connected on 11 three-pointers and converted 18-of-22 free throws (81.8 percent), offsetting a lower overall shooting percentage. The Bearcats also won the rebounding battle 39-37, highlighted by 16 offensive rebounds that led to key second-chance points.

Defensively, Lander forced 22 Middle Georgia turnovers and recorded 13 steals, disrupting the Knights throughout the second half. Middle Georgia shot 39.6 percent from the field and received solid bench production, but was unable to regain momentum after Lander seized control late.

The win tightens the race in the Peach Belt Conference and gives Lander continued momentum heading into the heart of league play.

The Bearcats will travel to Georgia College and State University on Wednesday, Jan. 17, for a midweek matchup against the Bobcats. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
