GREENWOOD – The eighth-ranked Lander field hockey team dropped its first match of the season on Saturday, falling 2-1 in overtime to fourth-ranked Newberry at Frank Hill Stadium. It marked the seventh consecutive one-goal game in the rivalry, with three of those decided in overtime—all in Greenwood.
After a scoreless first half, the Wolves struck first in the 37th minute, but the Bearcats answered three minutes later when graduate defender Nienke Meima cleaned up a rebound to level the score at 1-1. The goal was her team-leading fourth of the season.
Newberry controlled much of the fourth quarter, outshooting Lander 5-1, but senior goalkeeper Isabel Elenga stood tall, making two of her seven saves to send the game to overtime.
The Bearcats had the first chance in extra time, earning a penalty corner in the 63rd minute, but the Wolves capitalized on their own corner opportunity with less than a minute remaining, netting the golden goal to stay unbeaten.
Newberry (6-0, 2-0 SAC) outshot Lander 13-10 and finished with a 14-5 edge in penalty corners. Elenga's seven saves were a season high.
The Bearcats (5-1, 2-1 SAC) return to action Tuesday, traveling to Lincoln Memorial for an 11 a.m. start.
