Miller’s Season-High 27 Kills Not Enough as Bearcats Fall in Five-Set Conference Opener

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Katie Miller posted a season-high 27 kills, but Lander volleyball's comeback effort came up just short in a five-set Peach Belt Conference opener against Georgia College on Friday evening inside the Centennial Center.

The Bearcats (6-5, 0-1 PBC) dropped the opening two sets 25-21 and 26-24 before rallying with back-to-back wins in the third (25-18) and fourth (25-18) to even the match. After erasing a slow start, Lander rode a .419 hitting percentage in the fourth to force the deciding set, but the Bobcats (8-4, 1-0 PBC) held on late for a 15-13 victory.

Miller powered the Bearcats' offense with a .355 hitting percentage with 28 points while adding 17 digs. Alyssa Tegeler turned in seven kills on .500 hitting with a team-best six blocks, and Karson Browning contributed eight kills and three blocks. Setter Enisilina Savelio directed the attack with 45 assists to go along with four aces and 10 digs, while libero Emmi Cheek collected 21 digs.

Lander finished ahead in kills (59-51), blocks (9-4), and hitting percentage (.215 to .151), showing efficiency and balance on both sides of the ball. The Bearcats also flipped momentum after a .028 hitting percentage in the second set to dominate the fourth, when they committed no errors on 31 swings.

Despite the loss, Lander nearly handed Georgia College just its second home defeat of the year, falling just two points shy in the fifth set.

The Bearcats continue their conference schedule on the road Saturday, traveling to face Middle Georgia, the Peach Belt's newest member, in Macon, Ga., with first serve set for 3 p.m.
