Bearcats Close Strong to Defeat Montevallo in Five at Crossover

AIKEN, S.C. - Lander volleyball capped off its weekend in dramatic fashion Saturday, defeating Montevallo 3-2 in the final match of the PBC/Gulf South Crossover at the Convocation Center.

The Bearcats (6-4) battled back after dropping two of the first three sets to secure the victory, winning by scores of 25-21, 19-25, 14-25, 25-22, 15-7. With the loss, Montevallo drops to 2-6 on the year.

Katie Miller once again led the way for Lander with 15 kills and a match-high 26 digs, earning 17.5 points in the victory. She was joined by strong performances from Ryleigh Willard and Karson Browning, who each added 12 kills. Setter Enisilina Savelio paced the attack with 42 assists while also contributing 13 digs.

Defensively, Amelia May made a key impact at the net with five blocks and three aces, while libero Emmi Cheek tallied 20 digs and one ace.

The Bearcats held Montevallo to a .143 hitting percentage in the deciding set, closing the match on a dominant 9-2 run, and finished with the edge in nearly every category, including kills (58-55), assists (55-47), and overall hitting percentage (.226 to .198).

Despite the Falcons' strong middle sets, Lander's late surge sealed the match.

With the victory, the Bearcats leave Aiken on a high note, building momentum heading into conference play. Lander will return to action Friday, Sept. 26, for a road match at Milledgeville, Ga., to face Georgia College at 6 p.m. in Peach Belt Conference play.
