Volleyball Drops Two Close Matches at PBC/GSC Crossover

AIKEN, S.C. - The Lander volleyball team battled through two grueling matches Friday but came up short against Mississippi College and Alabama Huntsville on day one of the PBC/Gulf South Crossover, hosted by USC Aiken at the Convocation Center.

The Bearcats (5-4) fell in five sets to Mississippi College in the opener (19-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-21, 15-10) before dropping a 3-1 decision to UAH (25-21, 25-19, 21-25, 25-22) in the afternoon.

Match One: Mississippi College 3, Lander 2

The opener was a tug-of-war defined by efficiency swings. Lander actually edged the Choctaws in total points (72-70), but the decisive stat came in the fifth set, where Mississippi College hit a blistering .500 with no errors while the Bearcats managed just .053.

Senior Katie Miller powered the Bearcats with 17 kills and three aces, while setter Enisilina Savelio turned in a double-double with 38 assists and 22 digs. Sophomores Karson Browning added 16 kills on .289 hitting, while Amelia May anchored the net defensively with a team-high five blocks.

A key factor was Mississippi College's serving, as Samarin Kipple delivered five of the team's nine aces and consistently disrupted Lander's serve-receive in crucial moments. However, the Bearcats matched with nine aces of their own—three from Miller and two apiece from Sam Alwardt and Quinn Butler.

Match Two: Alabama Huntsville 3, Lander 1

The nightcap showcased another razor-thin contest in the box score, with UAH hitting .273 to Lander's .217. The Bearcats had more kills in the third set but couldn't string together the stops needed to extend the match.

Miller once again led with 16 kills, while senior middle Alyssa Tegeler was the efficiency standout—hitting .500 with 10 kills on just 18 swings. Savelio kept the offense humming with 41 assists and added eight digs.

Defensively, libero Emmi Cheek was a workhorse, finishing with 26 digs against a UAH attack led by Caroline Moyer's 22 kills.

UAH's back-row defense proved decisive, with the Chargers collecting 79 digs to Lander's 72 and converting that advantage into point-scoring opportunities during extended rallies.

Lander will look to regroup on day two of the crossover, taking on the Montevallo Falcons at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Convocation Center.
