WINGATE, N.C. – Playing at the Wingate Soccer Complex at Pride Park in their third consecutive match away from home, the Lander women's soccer team lost 2-1 to the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon.
It's the first loss of the season for the Bearcats who were 2-0-1 entering the game, while the South Atlantic Conference-members Wingate moved to 2-1.
Peyton Bibbee scored for the second time this season after scoring in the season-opener versus North Greenville. Bibbee broke the ice in the 18th minute with her left foot from in close and was assisted by
Claire Regnault who registered a point for the third straight game.
Wingate matched the score in the 24th minute.
Maddie Leber and
Gabby Redman both had shots on goal before halftime but the teams were still knotted up at 1 after 45 minutes.
A pair of
Ansley Morrell scoring chances were stopped by the Wingate keeper over the first 15 minutes of the second half before the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead early in the 71st minute.
Evelyn Wright headed a cross from Leber the very next minute that glanced off the crossbar and nearly tied the game right back up.
Ruby Stayduhar had what turned out to be the final Bearcat shot on net in the 75th minute.
Lander outshot the hosts 18-7 throughout the game and held a 7-4 shots-on-goal edge.
Lander returns home to
Van Taylor Stadium this Wednesday, Sept. 17 for a match with another SAC school in Tusculum. Kick-off is on tap for 7 p.m.
