BELMONT, N.C. – On the road for the second straight game, the Lander women's soccer team got back in the win column with a 2-1 triumph over host Belmont Abbey at Alumni Field on Wednesday night.
Claire Regnault scored in a second consecutive contest while freshman
Paige Bailey netted her first collegiate goal.
Both goals came during the first half with Regnault breaking free on the right side of the Belmont Abbey defense and scoring with her right foot into the back left corner of the net in the 13th minute.
Maddie Leber assisted on the play.
Bailey's came in the 30th minute after the Crusaders had tied the game at 1, giving her the game-winner.
Having just checked into the game, the Myrtle Beach-native took
Darcy Ahern's pass and deked a defender before firing on net – the Crusaders' keeper got a hand on the ball but it had enough momentum behind it to cross the goal-line.
Bri Little picked up the secondary assist on the play for her first collegiate point.
Each team registered six shots on goal in the evenly-matched contest.
Keeper
Leah Hayes Coen made five important saves in 90 minutes and faced 11 shots in all.
The Bearcats will stay on the road this Saturday, Sept. 13, for a non-conference battle with Wingate. Kick-off at the WU Soccer Complex will be at 2 p.m.
