Bearcats Take Down Young Harris in Home Opener to Begin Redderson Invitational

Outside duo of Miller and Willard combine for 39 kills and 45 points in Lander’s 3-1 home-opening win.

GREENWOOD - The Lander volleyball team started the 2025 Redderson Invitational with a statement win Thursday night, defeating Young Harris 3-1 in its home opener at Finis Horne Arena.

Set scores were 29-27, 25-17, 21-25, and 25-17 as the Bearcats (2-2) secured their second victory of the season.

Outside hitters Katie Miller and Ryleigh Willard carried the offense with efficiency and power. Miller finished with a match-high 20 kills, four aces, three blocks, and 10 digs while hitting .204. Willard followed closely with 19 kills on a stellar .405 hitting percentage to go along with 15 digs.

After dropping the third set, Lander responded with its best offensive frame of the night in the fourth, hitting .500 with 17 kills against just one error. The Bearcats jumped out early behind Miller, Willard then pulled away behind key contributions from Karson Browning and setter Enisilina Savelio. Miller delivered back-to-back service aces to push the lead late, and Browning sealed the win with a kill to clinch the match.

Savelio directed the attack with 47 assists while adding seven kills on a .438 percentage. Emmi Cheek anchored the back row with 23 digs, and Browning led the defensive effort at the net with six blocks.

As a team, Lander outhit Young Harris .248 to .127, finishing with 61 kills to the Mountain Lions' 40. The Bearcats also held advantages in digs (73-66), blocks (11-5), and assists (57-38).

Lander continues play in the Redderson Invitational on Friday, Sept. 12, hosting Chowan at 3 p.m. and Saint Anselm at 8 p.m. inside Horne Arena. Admission is free. If matches finish ahead of schedule, the next warmup will begin five minutes after the previous contest, so start times may move up. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to ensure they don't miss the action.
