Bearcats Sweep Doubleheader Behind Sherman’s Shutout and Extra-Inning Walk-Off

GREENWOOD - The Lander University softball team rode standout performances from both the circle and the batter's box to sweep Tuesday's doubleheader against Emmanuel University (Ga.) at Doug Spears Field, claiming a 4-0 shutout in Game 1 and a thrilling 4-3 walk-off victory in extra innings in Game 2.

GAME ONE: Lander 4, Emmanuel 0

Freshman pitcher Paige Sherman stole the spotlight in the opener, hurling her first career complete-game shutout, allowing just one hit and striking out two over seven scoreless innings.

Sherman (3-3) was nearly untouchable, retiring 13 batters via groundout and commanding the circle with a 73-pitch gem.

Lander (17-19) broke through in the second inning when Kara VonAchen laced a two-run double to right-center, scoring Linda Moore and Reagan Hill. In the fifth, Samantha Bumgarner added insurance with a towering two-run homer to left-center, stretching the Bearcats' lead to four.

Offensively, the Bearcats tallied 12 hits, with VonAchen leading the way, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Raquel Camuglia, Emily Allen, and Moore chipped in two hits each in the clean, error-free win.

GAME TWO: Lander 4, Emmanuel 3 (8 innings)

The nightcap turned into a comeback classic, with Lander rallying from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game in the seventh and walk it off in the eighth.

Trailing by three entering the bottom of the seventh, Bumgarner sparked the rally again, driving in two with a single to left-center. Raquel Camuglia capitalized on a fielder's choice, driving in the tying run to push the game into extra innings.

In the eighth, Moore came in clutch, singling to center to score Gracie Derrick for the game-winning run. The walk-off capped an 11-hit effort from Lander. Hill led the Bearcats at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and one run scored, while Moore finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Jacy Ayers (1-5) earned her first win of the season with two shutout innings in relief, allowing no hits while keeping the Lions (17-24) off the board after their sixth-inning home run.

With the sweep, Lander improved to 18-19 overall and gained key momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
