Bearcats Sweep Doubleheader to Clinch Series at Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Lander softball team extended its win streak to five games Saturday, sweeping a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against Flagler to clinch the three-game road series at Flagler Field.

The Bearcats (20-19, 8-9 PBC) took Game 1 with a 3-2 win before breaking out offensively in Game 2 for an 11-3 victory over the Saints (27-14, 10-7 PBC).

Game 1: Lander 3, Flagler 2

Paige Sherman delivered a complete-game performance in the circle, scattering five hits while allowing just one earned run. The junior right-hander improved to 4-3 on the season, striking out one and stranding the tying run at second base in the seventh to preserve the win.

Lander broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth when Samantha Bumgarner launched a solo home run to center field.

In the sixth, Linda Moore singled up the middle, scoring Kaitlyn Defranko to extend the Bearcats' lead to 2-0. Emily Allen followed with a single to right, and a Flagler fielding error allowed Moore to score, pushing the lead to 3-0.

Flagler cut into the deficit in the bottom of the seventh. After a walk and a single put two runners on, Sydney Stewart lined a two-run single to left to make it 3-2. However, Sherman induced a groundout to second to end the game with the tying run stranded at second.

Bumgarner finished 4-for-4 with an RBI, while Allen went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Moore added a hit, three walks, and a run scored.

Game 2: Lander 11, Flagler 3

Lander's offense exploded for 11 runs on 16 hits in the nightcap, including a seven-run seventh inning to pull away late.

Emily Allen capped the day with a grand slam in the seventh, finishing with four RBIs and her ninth home run of the season.

Linda Moore paced the Bearcats' offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Naya Jones and Reagan Hill each tallied three hits, with Hill adding a double. Samantha Bumgarner and Kara VonAchen chipped in two hits apiece as Lander totaled 16 hits in the rout.

Trailing 1-0 after the first inning, the Bearcats tied the game in the third with an RBI single from Jones. Moore gave Lander the lead for good in the sixth with a two-run single, then scored on a bases-loaded walk by Jones to make it 4-1.

Flagler responded with two runs in the bottom half to make it 4-3, but Lander's offense erupted in the final frame. The Bearcats sent 11 batters to the plate in the seventh, highlighted by Allen's grand slam and RBI hits from Bumgarner and VonAchen.

Jacy Ayers earned the win, improving to 2-5, while Mattye Geddings recorded the final four outs for her second save of the season.
