Bearcats Take Series Despite Setback Against Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Despite a tough 11-4 loss to Flagler on Sunday afternoon, Lander softball secured the weekend series win, 2-1, marking an important Peach Belt Conference triumph on the road.

Lander (20-20, 8-10 PBC) opened the scoring early and showed flashes of offensive momentum, but a seven-run third inning by Flagler (28-14, 11-7 PBC) proved too much to overcome in the series finale at Flagler Field.

The Bearcats jumped out in front in the first inning when Emily Allen crossed the plate on a fielder's choice by Gracie Derrick. After Flagler knotted it up in the second, Lander briefly reclaimed the lead in the top of the third.

Samantha Bumgarner delivered an RBI single, scoring Raquel Camuglia and giving the Bearcats a 2-1 edge.

But Flagler stormed back in the bottom half of the inning, stringing together six hits and capitalizing on a grand slam from Jordan Moss to seize an 8-2 lead.

Lander responded quickly in the fourth when Allen blasted a two-run homer to center, trimming the deficit to 8-4. However, the Saints countered again in the bottom of the frame with a three-run shot by Kiersten James to push the score to 11-4, where it would remain.

Despite the setback, Lander claimed the series thanks to back-to-back wins on Saturday, improving their conference standing and showcasing a resilient offensive lineup.

Allen led the Bearcats at the plate with a 2-RBI performance, scoring twice and going 1-for-3 with a walk. Reagan Hill and Kara VonAchen each added two hits, with VonAchen scoring once, while Samantha Bumgarner chipped in an RBI single.

Lander's pitching staff combined to allow 11 runs on 13 hits, with starter Paige Sherman (4-4) taking the loss after surrendering six runs over 2.1 innings.

Mattye Geddings followed in relief, giving up five runs in 1.1 innings, while Jacy Ayers closed out the final 2.1 innings with a scoreless effort, striking out one and allowing just two hits.

Lander returns to action next weekend as they look to build on this series win and push above .500 overall with the postseason picture in sight.
