Bearcats Clinch Series with Gritty Game Two Victory Over Georgia Southwestern

GREENWOOD - After dropping the opener in a high-scoring affair, Lander softball responded with a gritty, bounce-back victory in Game Two to clinch the series over Georgia Southwestern, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Doug Spears Field.

Game One: Georgia Southwestern 11, Lander 3

The Bearcats couldn't overcome a barrage of early offense from Georgia Southwestern in Saturday's opener, falling 11-3 in six innings. The Hurricanes jumped on the board quickly with a two-run homer by C. Watson in the first and never let up, scoring in five of the six innings.

Lander clawed back briefly with a three-run third inning, aided by defensive miscues from the Hurricanes. Sajarie Jones and Samantha Bumgarner scored on back-to-back errors, and Gracie Derrick added an RBI to close the gap to 4-3.

But the Hurricanes responded with a three-run homer from S. Bradford in the fourth and continued to capitalize on Lander's defensive struggles, tacking on four more insurance runs.
GSW starter P. McCard went the distance, allowing just one earned run on six hits to improve to 7-5. Lander's Jacy Ayers took the loss, dropping to 0-5.

Game Two: Lander 3, Georgia Southwestern 2

The Bearcats wasted no time shaking off the early defeat, jumping ahead in the first inning. Samantha Bumgarner ripped an RBI double to left field, scoring Sajarie Jones and putting Lander on the board with early momentum.

Lander struck again in the third, capitalizing on some missteps by the Hurricanes. Reagan Hill delivered a clutch RBI single to left, plating Bumgarner and extending the lead to 2-0. Moments later, Linda Moore came through with a well-placed sacrifice fly to score Gracie Derrick, giving Lander a 3-0 advantage.

Pitcher Paige Sherman was locked in from the first pitch, delivering a gutsy complete-game performance. The freshman struck out five batters over seven innings, scattering four hits and allowing just two earned runs. She held Georgia Southwestern scoreless until the fourth and then retired the final nine batters she faced to shut the door and earn her second win of the season.

Despite being outhit 4-3, Lander played clean defense with no errors and made the most of their opportunities, forcing three Hurricane miscues and turning them into runs.
