Bearcats Take Senior Day Series with Doubleheader Sweep of Columbus State

GREENWOOD - Lander softball closed out its home schedule in style Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader from Columbus State to clinch the Peach Belt Conference series, 2-1, on Senior Day at Doug Spears Field.

The Bearcats (22-21, 13-14 PBC) blanked the Cougars (29-24, 15-12 PBC) in Game 1 behind a dominant performance from Jacy Ayers before rallying late in Game 2 to complete the sweep.

Game 1: Lander 6, Columbus State 0

Sophomore right-hander Ayers tossed her first career complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits while striking out six to lead the Bearcats to a 6-0 victory.

Lander erupted for five runs in the opening frame, taking advantage of five walks and a passed ball. Kara VonAchen, Naya Jones, Samantha Bumgarner, and Linda Moore drove in runs, while Raquel Camuglia added two hits and an RBI in the win.

Columbus State starter Lily Miller (10-5) was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs—five earned—over three innings.

Game 2: Lander 7, Columbus State 3

In the nightcap, Lander rallied from a 2-1 deficit with a six-run outburst in the sixth inning, taking advantage of three Cougar errors to pull away for a 7-3 win.

Naya Jones sparked the rally with an RBI single to tie the game. Linda Moore and Gracie Derrick each reached on errors that led to four unearned runs, while Derrick later scored on a wild pitch to cap the inning.

Paige Sherman (5-5) earned the win in relief, holding Columbus State to one run over the final 3.2 innings.

Emily Allen led Lander at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, while Naya Jones added an RBI single and scored once in the Bearcats' 7-3 win over Columbus State.

With the wins, Lander claimed the series 2-1 and closed out the regular season home slate with momentum heading into the remainder of the regular season.
