ETTRICK, Va. – The Lander men's lacrosse team picked up a dominant 21-5 win over host Virginia State on Friday afternoon at Rogers Stadium.
Playing in Virginia for the second time this week – the Bearcats beat Walsh (Ohio) 14-4 in a neutral-site game on Tuesday – Lander improved its record to 5-3 while VSU dropped to 2-5.
Two Bearcats scored five goals and tallied eight points against the Trojans:
Zane Dalpe and
Carter Wilcox.
Will Maeder and
Jeremy Wudrick added three goals each, and
Michael Mattaliano, two.
Bradley Brown,
Addison Kamm and
Levi Roest all had one; Kamm's was his first career goal.
Breton Crewe won 8 of 10 face-offs and tied for the team lead with six ground balls.
Wilcox struck first just 30 seconds into the day to put Lander ahead. The Trojans responded less than a minute later but the Bearcats scored four unanswered goals over the next five-plus minutes for a 5-1 lead.
VSU scored another goal before Dalpe and Wilcox assisted on each other's goals and made it 7-2 after 15 minutes.
The Blue and Gold scored all six goals in the second quarter to push their scoring run to eight in a row en route to a 13-2 halftime lead.
The Trojans opened the second-half scoring to make it 13-3. Lander soon got hot again with a 5-0 scoring stretch bookended by Wudrick's second and third goals of the afternoon.
With an 18-4 lead in hand with nine minutes left in the game, Dalpe added his final score of the day on the man-advantage. After a Trojan goal, Kamm found the back of the net with three minutes to go, and Maeder finished off the scoring a minute later.
Lander returns to Greenwood next Saturday (March 15) for a non-conference contest versus Anderson (S.C.). The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
