Softball Falls Short in Doubleheader Against North Greenville

GREENWOOD - The Lander Bearcats (12-7, 3-0 PBC) dropped both games of Tuesday's doubleheader against North Greenville at Doug Spears Field. Lander fell 4-2 in the opener before coming up short in a 6-3 battle in game two.

Game One: North Greenville 4, Lander 2

Lander struck first in the opening game, with Sajarie Jones scoring in the first inning on an RBI single by Raquel Camuglia. The Bearcats held that early advantage until the fourth inning when North Greenville (12-7) capitalized on a single and throwing error in left field to push across three unearned runs.

The Bearcats responded in the bottom of the fourth when Madison Kraus delivered an RBI double to cut the deficit to 3-2. However, Lander struggled to manufacture additional offense against North Greenville.

The Trailblazers added an insurance run in the seventh on a single up the middle. Lander's Halona Sampson (3-1) took the loss, surrendering three runs (two earned) over 3.2 innings. Mattye Geddings and Paige Sherman combined for 3.1 innings of relief, allowing one run on six hits.

Game Two: North Greenville 6, Lander 3

In the nightcap, Lander again showed resilience but could not contain North Greenville's offense. The Crusaders plated two runs in the first, taking advantage of a wild pitch and an RBI single.

The Bearcats clawed back in the bottom half of the inning when Emily Allen drove in Kaitlyn DeFranco with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1. However, North Greenville extended its lead in the third on a bases-clearing three-RBI double, pushing the score to 5-1.

Lander answered with two runs in the third as Allen delivered an RBI single, and Reagan Hill's sacrifice fly led to an error that allowed another run to cross, making it 5-3.

The Bearcats, however, were held scoreless over the final four frames as North Greenville tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI double.

Alyssa Grimes (1-3) took the loss for Lander, allowing two runs on two hits. Mattye Geddings, Paige Sherman, and Jacy Ayers combined for 6.2 innings of relief, holding North Greenville to four runs on 11 hits.

Despite the setbacks, Lander saw strong performances from Allen, who recorded three hits and two RBIs across the doubleheader, and Camuglia, who drove in a run in game one. The Bearcats will look to bounce back as they return to action later this week.
