Lander Falls to Top-Ranked Valdosta State in Competitive Match

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Lander University men's tennis team (6-2) faced a formidable challenge on Tuesday, falling 7-0 to the nation's top-ranked Valdosta State at the VSU Tennis Complex. Despite the final score, the Bearcats showed resilience and competitiveness across both singles and doubles play.

Doubles Recap

In doubles action, the Bearcats' No. 1 duo of senior Max Barriere and senior Merlin Bellet engaged in a tightly contested match against Takeshi Taco and Xaveam Van Wijk, narrowly losing 7-6 (7-5). 

At the No. 2 position, juniors Harry Pugh and Brendan Jayaprakash secured a 6-4 victory over Edgar Destouet and Arthur Bord, while the No. 3 pair of senior Markus Sorensen and senior Ludvig Danielsson were edged out 6-4 by Jan Skerbatis and Boruch Skierkier. 

Valdosta State clinched the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.

Singles Recap

Singles featured several hard-fought contests. Pugh started strong at the No. 1 spot by taking the first set 6-3 against Skierkier but ultimately fell in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Bellet, playing at No. 2, faced a tough opponent in Taco and was defeated 6-1, 6-2.

At No. 3 singles, junior Mouad Naoui was overcome by Destouet with a score of 6-3, 6-0. Jayaprakash, competing at No. 4, battled through three sets but was edged out by Jerome Iaconi, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

In the No. 5 position, sophomore Ismail ElShafei put forth a valiant effort but fell to Julien Doitteau, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 6, Barriere also faced a challenging match against Van Wijk, resulting in a 6-3, 6-4 loss.

With the 7-0 loss, the Bearcats drop to 6-2 on the season, while the Blazers improve to 6-0.

The Bearcats will look to bounce back in an upcoming home match against North Greenville on Wednesday, March 12. Doubles action will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Joe Cabri Tennis Center.
