Lander Falls in Tight Contest Against USC Aiken, 2-1

GREENWOOD - Despite a strong pitching performance from Paige Sherman and a seven-hit outing from the Bearcats, Lander (14-16, 4-6 PBC) came up just short in a 2-1 loss to USC Aiken (16-19, 4-9 PBC) on Friday evening at Doug Spears Field.

Sherman (1-3) delivered a solid performance in the circle, going the full seven innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run. However, the two-run third inning from the Pacers proved to be the difference in the PBC matchup.

After USC Aiken (16-19) struck first in the third, Lander (14-16) responded quickly as Sajarie Jones delivered an RBI single down the left-field line to drive in Kaitlyn DeFranco, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

DeFranco provided an offensive spark for the Bearcats, going 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. Emily Allen also had a strong showing at the plate, tallying three hits in three at-bats.

The Bearcats had opportunities late but could not capitalize against the Pacers Lakyn Phillips (9-3), who struck out eight in a complete-game effort.
