Bearcats Drop Doubleheader Against USC Aiken

GREENWOOD - The Lander University softball team (14-18, 4-8 PBC) battled throughout the day but was unable to secure a win in Saturday's doubleheader against Peach Belt Conference foe USC Aiken (18-19, 7-11), falling 2-0 and 5-2 at Doug Spears Field. The losses capped off a tough series for the Bearcats, who dropped all three games to the Pacers.

Game One: USC Aiken 2, Lander 0

In a tightly contested opener, Lander (14-17) held USC Aiken (17-19) to just five hits but couldn't break through offensively against the Pacers pitcher, who tossed a complete-game shutout for USCA.

The Pacers got on the board early with a first-inning RBI double. USC Aiken added an unearned run in the sixth, but Lander's pitching kept the game within reach.

Senior pitcher Jacy Ayers (0-4) delivered a strong performance despite taking the loss, allowing just one earned run on five hits over seven innings while striking out three.

Offensively, Gracie Derrick led the Bearcats with a 2-for-3 performance, including a double. Sajarie Jones, Linda Moore, Raquel Camuglia, Reagan Hill, and Samantha Bumgarner each recorded a hit, but the Bearcats couldn't string together the offense needed to score.

Game Two: USC Aiken 5, Lander 2

The Bearcats showed resilience in the second game, battling back late but falling short again. USC Aiken struck quickly, plating two runs in the first before adding insurance runs in the second and fourth innings.

Lander responded in the sixth when Raquel Camuglia came through with a clutch two-run double, scoring Emily Allen and Sajarie Jones to cut the deficit to 5-2. Samantha Bumgarner added a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 at the plate.

On the mound, Payton Schurlknight (0-1) took the loss in her second start of the season, allowing four runs (three earned) in 1.1 innings. Mattye Geddings and Paige Sherman provided solid relief, combining for 5.2 innings, allowing just one run to keep Lander within striking distance.

The doubleheader sweep sealed a three-game series loss for the Bearcats, who also fell in Friday's series opener. Lander will look to regroup as they continue Peach Belt Conference play in search of a bounce-back performance.
