Hunsberger and Davis Earn NWCA Super Region II Wrestler and Rookie of the Year Awards

MANHEIM, Pa. — David Hunsberger and Christian Davis have been named the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Super Region II Wrestler and Rookie of the Year, respectively, the organization announced Wednesday afternoon.

This marks the third time a Lander wrestler has earned the Super Region II Wrestler of the Year honor, joining assistant coaches Logan Hall (2023) and Zeth Brower (2022). Davis becomes the second Bearcat to claim the Super Region II Rookie of the Year award, following Hunsberger's recognition after the 2023 season.

Hunsberger, the 2024 and 2025 165-pound national champion, capped off his third consecutive 30-win season atop the podium in Indianapolis. Of his 30 wins, 22 came with bonus points, resulting in a 73% conversion rate. He also recorded the Bearcats' fastest pin of the season, a 16-second fall against Grand Valley State.

In addition to his triumph at the NCAA Championships, Hunsberger became the first Bearcat to win two Midwest Classic titles, was named the Conference Carolinas Wrestler of the Year, and earned the title of Most Outstanding Heavyweight Wrestler at the Conference Carolinas Championship.

Davis completed his debut season with a 34-7 record, setting the program record for most wins by a freshman. He finished third at the NCAA Championships, the highest finish by a freshman in program history. Of his 34 victories, 23 were by bonus points, leading the team with a 68% conversion rate. Davis also became the first Lander freshman to win the Midwest Classic and was named the Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year.

Both Hunsberger and Davis will advance to the National Wrestler and Rookie of the Year ballot, where they will compete against award winners from the other five Super Regions.
