Maholtz Named Conference Carolinas Wrestler of the Week

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Lander freshman George Maholtz has been named the Conference Carolinas Wrestler of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon. Maholtz becomes the second-straight Bearcat to earn a weekly honor after Dylan Kohn claimed the award last week and the third different Lander wrestler to be recognized this season, joining Isaac Sheeren.

Maholtz placed third at the Midwest Classic over the weekend, the second-highest finish among Conference Carolinas wrestlers in the event. The true freshman went 8-1 across the two-day tournament and led the entire field in pins with five.

After suffering his lone loss in the third round of the championship bracket, the Greenville, S.C. native responded with a dominant consolation run on Sunday, pinning four of his next five opponents, including avenging his earlier loss to Emmett Nelson (UW–Parkside). Maholtz capped off his run with an 8-6 decision over #8 Jake Niffenegger (Gannon) to secure the third-place finish.

The Lander wrestling team returns to action on January 2, 2026, opening the new year with a dual against King in a rematch of last season's Conference Carolinas Championship. First bout is set for 7 p.m. inside Horne Arena.
