INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The second-ranked Lander Wrestling team closed out day one of the 46th Annual Midwest Classic in eighth place with 43.0 team points in a field of more than 45 teams. Pitt-Johnstown leads the tournament with 60.5 points entering Sunday's final day.

In total, Lander advanced six wrestlers into day two of the double-elimination tournament, highlighted by dominant performances from #1 David Hunsberger and #4 Marvelous Rutledge, both of whom went a perfect 3–0 on the opening day.

At 165, Hunsberger was in complete control, recording two technical falls and a pin to remain unbeaten. The two-time defending national champion scored bonus points in all three matches to position himself for another deep run.

Rutledge matched that consistency at 197, earning two tech falls and a major decision to advance to day two undefeated.

George Maholtz also put together a strong showing at 141, going 3–1 on the day with a pin and a major decision before rebounding in the consolation bracket with another fall to stay alive heading into Sunday.

At 149, #4 Isham Peace advanced unbeaten as well, opening the tournament with a decision before adding a major decision in the championship bracket to sit at 2–0.

Several Bearcats battled through the consolation rounds to remain in contention. #9 Kaden Kuenzi responded to a championship-round loss with a pin to stay alive at 125, while #15 Maxwell Kiel rebounded from an early setback with a major decision to continue his run at 174. #15 Noah Roulo picked up a technical fall in the wrestlebacks at 157 before being eliminated later in the day.

Lander also saw action from JT Spence at 184, who fought through multiple consolation matches before bowing out, while #6 Isaac Sheeren went 2–1 before exiting the tournament due to injury.

Action resumes Sunday morning inside Nicoson Hall on the campus of the University of Indianapolis.
