Lander Claims Forfeit Victory Over West Liberty Aboard USS Yorktown

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Lander wrestling team was scheduled to face West Liberty for the first time since 2023, but disagreements surrounding weigh-in procedures and how the match would proceed ultimately prevented the two teams from competing aboard the USS Yorktown on Saturday.

Despite efforts to resolve the situation, the decision was made for the match to proceed, with all 10 Lander wrestlers having their arms raised following individual forfeits, resulting in a 60-0 victory for the Bearcats.

The result marks Lander's third consecutive victory aboard the historic aircraft carrier docked in Charleston Harbor.

"Despite our best efforts, we are disappointed that our student-athletes did not have the opportunity to compete in a match they had been looking forward to all offseason," Lander head coach R.C. LaHaye said. "We want to thank Neal Collins and the entire Yorktown staff for putting on another great event this year and for their efforts in helping us navigate a difficult situation. We now turn our attention to the Georgia Open on Sunday before opening conference competition next week."

The Bearcats will return to action Sunday at the Georgia Open in Franklin Springs, Georgia.
