Lander Takes No. 4 Francis Marion to the Wire in Game 1, Drops Doubleheader

FLORENCE, S.C. - The Lander Bearcats gave No. 4 Francis Marion all they could handle in a tightly contested doubleheader on Tuesday, nearly pulling off a major upset in Game 1 before ultimately falling in both matchups at FMU Softball Stadium.

Game 1: Francis Marion 5, Lander 3

Lander (14-14) held a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, poised to take down the Patriots (30-3). Freshman pitcher Paige Sherman delivered a strong performance in the circle, holding the high-powered Francis Marion lineup in check for much of the game.

The Bearcats surged ahead in the fourth inning as Raquel Camuglia doubled in Naya Jones to tie the game at 1-1. Moments later, Kara VonAchen ripped a two-run single to center, giving Lander a 3-1 advantage.

Sherman (1-2) worked through five innings efficiently but ran into trouble in the sixth. Francis Marion's Tallulah Civoniceva drove in a run to cut the deficit to 3-2 before Rylie Webster delivered the crushing blow, a three-run homer to left that gave the Patriots a 5-3 lead.

Lander put runners on base in the seventh but couldn't capitalize against FMU ace Alyssa Poston (17-1), who closed the door on the comeback.

Despite the loss, Sherman showed tremendous poise against a top-ranked opponent, striking out four across 5.2 innings.

Game 2: Francis Marion 8, Lander 0 (6 innings)

The Patriots flexed their offensive power early in Game 2, plating five runs in the first inning and never looking back.

Lander's offense struggled against Francis Marion's Jenna Walling (10-1), who allowed just two hits and struck out seven in the shutout victory. The Bearcats' best chance to score came in the fourth when Reagan Hill singled, but Walling escaped the jam unscathed.

Despite the tough outcomes, Lander proved it could compete with one of the nation's best teams, nearly taking Game 1. The Bearcats will look to bounce back as they return to Peach Belt Conference play.

UP NEXT
The Bearcats will finally return to Doug Spears Field for a long-awaited PBC series, marking their first home action in 10 games after a grueling road stretch.

Lander will face the USC Aiken Pacers (14-18, 3-9 PBC) for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 28. Game 1 of the series will start at 5 p.m. at Doug Spears Field.
