Several Program Records Fall at Montreat Open

MONTREAT, N.C. — The Lander Track and Field teams wrapped up a strong weekend at the Montreat College Open as they broke several program records and had numerous top three-finishes across the two day meet at Pulliam Stadium.

On the track, Tymia Willis won the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 58.92 seconds, while Caalyn Hyman placed second in both the 100-meter dash (12.66) and the 200-meter dash (26.65). On the men's side, Vernon Watson took first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.93 and finished second in the 100-meter dash, clocking 10.89 seconds, a new program record.

In the men's 400-meter dash, Michael Balkman -- the PBC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year --  claimed first place with a time of 48.02 seconds, setting another program record. Kendel Rollerson also earned a solid third-place finish with a time of 49.18 seconds.

Lander also excelled in the relays. The men's 4x100-meter relay team of Pharrell Martinez, Aijalon Jackson, Rollerson, and Watson won with a time of 41.94 seconds. The men's 4x400-meter relay team finished third in 3:27.61.

In the field events, Tamiya Mobley claimed first place in the women's high jump with a clearance of 1.46 meters. Riley Wolters and McCayla Willingham tied for third at 1.41 meters. On the men's side, Gage Kukucka finished second in the high jump with a mark of 1.86 meters.

Jakeira Anderson earned a third-place finish in the women's discus throw with a mark of 35.30 meters, setting a new program record. In the hammer throw, Emma Avant placed sixth with a mark of 34.98 meters, also setting a program best. Dylan Gilder placed second in the men's javelin throw with a mark of 49.47 meters.

The Bearcats will stay in the Palmetto State for their next competition as they travel to Anderson Unversity for the Electric City Invitational on April 4th and 5th.
