GREENWOOD – In an in-state battle with North Greenville on Saturday afternoon at Van Taylor Stadium, the Lander men's lacrosse team was defeated 14-10.
The Bearcats (5-5) were led in scoring by
Carter Wilcox – who set a new program record for career points (206), eclipsing the previous high mark of 204 set by Adam Mather from 2020-23.
Wilcox had eight on Saturday thanks to five goals and three assists.
Zane Dalpe scored twice and added an assist of his own, while
Breton Crewe,
Chase Hanson and
Michael Mattaliano each scored once.
The Trailblazers (5-4, 2-0 Conference Carolinas) scored first 1:11 into the game. Wilcox found Dalpe four minutes later for the equalizer. After another NGU score, Wilcox picked up his second assist on Mattaliano's score halfway through the first.
Trailing 3-2 in the second quarter, Wilcox and Crewe scored six seconds apart – the latter coming directly off the face-off – to give the Bearcats their first lead at 4-3 with 9:38 to go in the half.
The game was tied at six by halftime.
NGU scored three times early in the third quarter but Wilcox's fourth strike of the day made it 9-8 with 4:34 on the clock. The visitors scored three more times to close the quarter with a 12-8 advantage.
Each side added two goals in the fourth for the final score.
Lander will be on the road a week from today (March 29) for a matchup with current-No. 5 Wingate. Face-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. in North Carolina.
