Lander Sweeps Opening Conference Series with Thrilling Comeback and Shutout Victory

GREENWOOD - The Lander Bearcat softball team kicked off Peach Belt Conference play dramatically, rallying for an 11-10 comeback win in game one before securing a 3-0 shutout in game two to sweep USC Beaufort on Saturday at Doug Spears Field. The victories push Lander to 12-5 overall and 3-0 in the PBC, while the Sand Sharks drop to 15-8 (0-3 PBC).

Game One: Lander 11, USCB 10

Facing a six-run deficit heading into the bottom of the sixth, Lander erupted for five runs in the frame before Bella Angeli capped off the comeback with a two-run double in the seventh to seal the walk-off victory.

USC Beaufort jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, capitalizing on defensive miscues by the Bearcats. The Sand Sharks extended their advantage to 7-0 in the fourth, led by Tiana Chang's two-run single.

Lander responded in the bottom half, plating four unearned runs behind Naya Jones' clutch RBI single and a series of defensive errors by USC Beaufort. However, Chang struck again with a three-run homer in the sixth to put the Sand Sharks up 10-4.

Refusing to back down, the Bearcats loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and ignited a five-run rally. Raquel Camuglia delivered a two-run single, while Jones and Sajarie Jones each chipped in with RBIs to trim the deficit to one.

In the seventh, Lander completed the comeback as Angeli launched a double to right-center, scoring Samantha Bumgarner and Camuglia to give the Bearcats the walk-off win.

Alyssa Grimes (1-2) earned the win in the circle, holding USC Beaufort scoreless in the final frame.

Game One Leaders Game Two: Lander 3, USCB 0

Lander carried the momentum into game two, where Kamryn Akins (6-1) and freshman Paige Sherman combined for a three-hit shutout to secure the sweep.

The Bearcats wasted no time, striking in the first inning when Reagan Hill drove in Gracie Derrick with an RBI single. Sacrifice flies from Madison Kraus in the second, and Emily Allen in the third pushed the lead to 3-0, which proved to be all the offense Lander needed.

Akins was electric, allowing just two hits over four innings while striking out two and issuing no walks. Sherman took over in the fifth, closing out the final three frames to earn her first save of the season.

Game Two Leaders UP NEXT
The Bearcats will host North Greenville (11-7)  for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 4. The first game will start at 2 p.m. at Doug Spears Field.
