Bearcats Close Out Bri Surrento Kickoff with Two Saturday Wins to Finish 4-0

GREENWOOD - The Lander Bearcats (6-2, 0-0 PBC) put on a show at the Bri Surrento Kickoff, capping off a flawless tournament run with two impressive wins on Saturday. The Bearcats closed the tournament with a 10-2 victory over Catawba and a thrilling 7-6 walk-off win against UNC Pembroke.

"We had younger kids step up, and our returners come up in clutch situations," stated Head Coach Maddie Gibbs. "I'm super proud of the team wins on the weekend."

Game 1: Lander 10, Catawba 2 (five innings)

The Bearcats wasted no time setting the tone against Catawba, jumping out to an early lead and never looking back.

Emily Allen (2-for-2, HR, 2 RBIs, three runs) was the spark, driving in the first run with an RBI double before Raquel Camuglia (2-for-3, 2 RBIs) followed up with an RBI single. Allen continued to shine, blasting a solo home run in the third to extend the lead.

Allen continued her dominant game in the third inning with a solo home run to left-center.

Catawba's Beth Gallagher tried to keep her team in it with two home runs, but Lander put the game away with a seven-run fourth inning. Bella Angeli (3-for-3, 3 RBIs) provided the biggest hit, clearing the bases with a three-run double.

On the mound, Mattye Geddings (2-1) shut the door with three innings of relief, allowing just one run and striking out one. The Bearcats pounded out 12 hits and made the most of their scoring opportunities to secure the 10-2 win.

Game 2: Lander 7, UNC Pembroke 6

Lander found itself in a back-and-forth battle in the nightcap against UNC Pembroke, but when it mattered most, the Bearcats came through in dramatic fashion.

The Bearcats started strong, with Emily Allen (2-for-3) tripling in the first inning to bring home Linda Moore (4-for-4, 2 RBIs), who had a career night at the plate. Raquel Camuglia followed with an RBI single to give Lander an early lead.

Lander extended its advantage in the second when Moore delivered again, driving in two runs with a single to make it 4-1. However, UNC Pembroke clawed back, scoring once in the third before a costly error helped them plate four runs in the sixth, pushing them ahead 6-4.

With their perfect tournament record on the line, Lander responded in the seventh. Allen singled home Moore to cut the deficit to one, and Samantha Bumgarner tied the game off of a fielder's choice.

Then, with two runners on, Naya Jones (2-for-4) stepped up and smashed a double to left-center, driving in the decisive run and securing the walk-off victory.

Jones' moment was even more meaningful as she had been honored earlier in the tournament as the 2025 Brianna Surrento Scholarship recipient. She made sure to finish the night in unforgettable fashion, delivering the tournament's biggest hit.

The freshman Halona Sampson (2-0) earned the win in relief, throwing a scoreless seventh inning to keep Lander within striking distance.

With the win, the Bearcats closed out the Bri Surrento Kickoff with a perfect 4-0 record on the weekend, improving to 6-2 overall.
