Lander Plates 22 Runs, Goes 2-0 on Opening Day of Bri Surrento Kickoff Classic

GREENWOOD - The Lander Bearcats (4-2, 0-0 PBC) came out swinging to open the Bri Surrento Kickoff Classic, securing two impressive wins on Friday at Doug Spears Field. A relentless offensive effort in both games powered Lander past UNC Pembroke, 16-7, and Rollins, 6-5.

Game 1: Lander 16, UNC Pembroke 7; five innings

After a rocky start in the first inning that saw UNC Pembroke (3-4) take an early 1-0 lead, Lander responded in dominant fashion, capitalizing on errors and delivering clutch hits to put up 16 runs on 11 hits.

Raquel Camuglia (3-for-4) led the charge offensively, smashing a solo home run in the third. Linda Moore, Reagan Hill, Emily Allen, and Naya Jones totaled two RBIs each.

Lander capitalized on a five-error performance from UNC Pembroke, turning defensive mistakes into scoring opportunities. The Bearcats' bats came alive in the fifth inning, breaking the game wide open with an eight-run explosion that put the game out of reach.

On the mound, Mattye Geddings (1-1) secured the win in relief, holding off the Braves and allowing just one earned run over 1.1 innings.

Game 2: Lander 6, Rollins 5

In the nightcap, the Bearcats delivered an electric first inning as Raquel Camuglia and Emily Allen crushed back-to-back home runs to erase an early 2-0 Rollins lead. Allen's two-run shot to right-center tied the game, and moments later, Camuglia sent a solo blast to center, giving the Bearcats a 3-2 advantage.

The Tars regained control with two runs in the second and another in the fifth, but Lander had one more rally left. In the bottom of the sixth, Naya Jones laced a game-tying two-run triple before an errant throw allowed the go-ahead run to score.

The freshman Halona Sampson (1-0) shut down Rollins over the final two innings, picking up her first win of the season and sealing Lander's second victory of the day.

With 22 total runs scored on the day and a dynamic mix of power and clutch hitting, Lander made an emphatic statement to open the Bri Surrento Kickoff Classic. The Bearcats will look to keep the momentum rolling as the tournament continues.
