Men’s Tennis Defeats Emmanuel in Home Opener

GREENWOOD - On Wednesday afternoon, the Lander University men's tennis team (1-1, 0-0 PBC) secured a decisive 5-2 victory over Emmanuel University (3-1) in its home opener at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center. The Bearcats started strong, winning all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point before dominating in singles play to claim their first win of the season.

Doubles Recap

Lander set the tone early by sweeping the doubles competition. The pairing of Max Barriere and Benjamin Bates controlled the No. 1 spot with a 6-2 victory, while Brendan Jayaprakash and Harry Pugh followed up at No. 2 with a 6-4 win. The duo of Markus Sorensen and Ludvig Danielsson sealed the sweep with another 6-4 triumph at No. 3, giving the Bearcats the early 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

Singles Recap

Lander continued its momentum in singles action, winning four of the six matchups. Harry Pugh delivered a dominant performance at No. 2, defeating James Girdler in straight sets (6-2, 6-4). Markus Sorensen was equally impressive at No. 5, overpowering Alejandro Gomez (6-2, 6-3).

At No. 6, Brendan Jayaprakash battled back from a first-set loss to claim a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Matheus Pimenta. The most thrilling match of the day came at No. 3 singles, where Ismail ElShafei outlasted Henrique Castro in a grueling three-set battle, edging out a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win to cap off Lander's commanding performance.

While Merlin Bellet fell at No. 1 singles, and Mouad Naoui's match at No. 4 was cut short due to injury, the Bearcats had already done enough to seal the 5-2 victory.

Lander looks to build on this momentum as they head to Florence, S.C., in a match against the University of Mount Olive on Friday, Feb. 7. Doubles is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
