GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Lander men's golf team completed the final 27 holes of the Bearcat Spring Invitational at the Preserve at Verdae this afternoon.
The Bearcats didn't record a team score as multiple starters were unavailable with a flu bug, and so Lander played with five individuals as precaution in case others became sick.
Wingate (even-par) won the tournament by four strokes over Catawba. USC Aiken (+5) was one shot behind the Indians while Lenoir-Rhyne was nine-over in fourth.
The individual medalist for the tournament was Catawba's Paul Esnault at 3-under. He won a three-way playoff with a birdie on the par-5 18th over competitors from USC Aiken and Lenoir-Rhyne.
Gaston Edberg was the highest-placing Bearcat in an 8th-place tie at 1-over. Edberg closed his tournament with consecutive rounds under par, a 71 in the second and a tournament-low 68 in the third.
Edberg had three birdies and an eagle on the 18th in the second round and followed that up with four birdies and another eagle on 18 in his final round.
Samuel Guigui-Baruchel tied for 18th at +4 after closing the week with rounds of 72 and 77 with two birdies in each.
In a tie for 29th was
Jake Wakeford (+7). Wakeford shot 75-74 on Tuesday and carded three birdies on the day.
Cody Brenner had seven birdies over his second and third rounds and wound up fourth amongst the Lander contingent.
Aaron Lin had four birdies on the final day.
The Bearcats will hit the road for St. Augustine, Florida, and the Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate hosted by Lincoln Memorial next Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 10 and 11). The tournament will be played at St Johns Golf & Country Club.
