Lander Rallies in Singles to Secure 5-2 Victory Over Newberry

GREENWOOD - The Lander University men's tennis team (5-2, 0-0 PBC) staged an impressive comeback at home, overcoming an early deficit to defeat Newberry College (1-4) 5-2. After dropping the doubles point, the Bearcats responded with a dominant performance in singles, winning five of six matches to secure the victory.

Doubles Recap

In doubles action, Newberry struck first by taking two of the three matches to claim the opening point. Lander's Markus Sorensen and Ludvig Danielsson provided the lone highlight for the Bearcats in the No. 3 spot, delivering a convincing 6-2 win.

However, the Wolves bounced back with hard-fought victories at No. 2 and No. 1, where David Negzaoui and Joshua Fritz edged out Harry Pugh and Brendan Jayaprakash 7-5, while James Vincent and Daniel Watson closed the round with a 6-4 victory over Max Barriere and Benjamin Bates.

Singles Recap

Trailing 1-0 heading into singles, Lander wasted no time shifting the momentum. Mouad Naoui set the tone at No. 5 singles with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win, while Jayaprakash followed suit with a commanding 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6, putting the Bearcats ahead.

Harry Pugh extended the lead with a composed 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1, and Ismail ElShafei clinched the match at No. 4, battling to a 6-4, 7-5 triumph.

Though Newberry picked up a point at No. 3 behind Watson's straight-set win, Lander sealed the comeback when Merlin Bellet outlasted Negzaoui in a thrilling match, rallying from a set down to win 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.
