Bearcats’ Comeback Falls Short in Five-Set Battle at Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Lander volleyball team mounted an impressive comeback on the road Friday night but ultimately fell just short, dropping a five-set Peach Belt Conference thriller to Augusta at the George A. Christenberry Fieldhouse.

After dropping the first two sets 25-14 and 25-20, the Bearcats stormed back with renewed energy, taking the third and fourth sets 25-17 and 25-18 to force a decisive fifth. Despite the momentum shift, Augusta narrowly held on in the final frame, 15-13, to secure the win.

Senior outside hitter Katie Miller led all players with 22 kills, marking her 6th 20-plus kill performance of the season. Miller also added 12 digs for her 13th double-double.

At the net, Amelia May and Karson Browning delivered standout defensive performances for the Bearcats. May set a new career high with eight total blocks, while Browning matched a season high with seven. Browning also contributed nine kills and a .348 hitting percentage.

Setter Enisilina Savelio directed the Lander offense with 34 assists and 12 digs for her 9th double-double of the season, while Emmi Cheek anchored the back row with a team-high 23 digs.

Despite the loss, the Bearcats were the more efficient attacking team, hitting .197 compared to Augusta's .148. Lander's turnaround began midway through the match, as the offense caught fire and hit .462 in the fourth set with 12 kills and no errors, holding Augusta to a .000 clip.

The loss drops Lander to 16-8 overall and 8-4 in the Peach Belt Conference, while Augusta improves to 22-6 and 10-2 in league play.

The Bearcats and Jaguars will meet again Saturday, Nov. 8, at 4 p.m. for a rematch in Augusta, Ga.
