Lander Pulls Away for First Win of Season in Home Opener Against Erskine

GREENWOOD - The Lander women's basketball team earned its first win of the season Wednesday afternoon, using a dominant second half and aggressive defensive pressure to defeat Erskine 72-57 at Finis Horne Arena.

The Bearcats (1-3) opened the game with a 16-0 run, overwhelming the Flying Fleet from the start. Though Erskine eventually settled in and trimmed the deficit to one by halftime.

The Bearcats (1-3) outscored the Flying Fleet 39-25 after halftime, fueled by a pair of breakout performances from Trinity Thomas and Quadaija Langley. Thomas led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting, adding six rebounds and three steals in 33 minutes. Langley followed with 17 points, three assists, and four steals while knocking down seven field goals.

Lauren Crosland contributed 12 points and six boards, while Alindria Dudley anchored the interior with seven rebounds and eight points.

Lander's defense set the tone, forcing 35 Erskine turnovers and converting them into 35 points off giveaways—a decisive difference in a game that featured four lead changes. The Bearcats also dominated the offensive glass, collecting 29 offensive rebounds and turning them into 19 second-chance points.

A 21-point third quarter proved to be the turning point. A seven-point quarter for Langley and a three-pointer from Thomas extended Lander's lead to double digits and shifted momentum firmly in the Bearcats' favor.

Lander's pressure also stalled Erskine, which shot 42.6 percent from the field but struggled to maintain possessions under constant defensive traps. Despite 37 bench points from the Fleet, led by Haley Jones with 14 and Kaela Ward with 13, Lander was able to force key stops throughout the second half.

The win marks Lander's first of the season and provides momentum heading into the remainder of the nonconference slate.

The Blue and Gold will head to Ettrick, Va., this weekend for two games against Virginia State and Lincoln University (Pa.) in the VSU Cross-Divisional Classic. Bearcats open up the classic Saturday, Nov. 29, against Virginia State at 2:30 p.m.
