Thomas’ 22 Points Not Enough as Lander Drops Road Contest at Virginia State

ETTRICK, Va. - Despite a game-high 22 points from Trinity Thomas, the Lander women's basketball team dropped its Saturday afternoon matchup to Virginia State, falling 67-54 in day one of the VSU Cross-Divisional Classic at the Multipurpose Center. The Bearcats move to 1-4 on the season, while the Trojans improve to 3-2.

Thomas scored 22 points on 7-of-21 shooting, including four 3-pointers, and added nine rebounds in 39 minutes. Lander, however, struggled to string together consistent offense, shooting 30.6 percent (19-of-62) from the field and 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from deep.

After trailing 18-15 at the end of the first quarter, the Bearcats were outscored 21-9 in the second frame as Virginia State took control. Lander's best push came in the fourth quarter, where it shot 46.7 percent (7-of-15) and hit four 3-pointers (4-of-7), but the deficit proved too large to overcome.

Virginia State saw balanced scoring, led by Sydney Roberts and Skylar White with 12 points each. The Trojans' bench contributed 43 points, and their interior presence made the difference, outscoring Lander 44-22 in the paint.

Lander posted 13 second-chance points and forced 17 turnovers but couldn't capitalize consistently, finishing with 12 points off Virginia State miscues. The Trojans held a 19-2 advantage in fast-break points and controlled the boards 33-30.

Quadaija Langley added eight points, all in the fourth quarter, for Lander, while Lauren Crosland scored seven and pulled down five rebounds.

Lander looks to bounce back Sunday in day two of the VSU Classic, taking on Lincoln University (Pa.) (2-4) at 2 p.m. at the Multipurpose Center.
