Bearcats outlast Flagler in five-set thriller on Senior Night

GREENWOOD - In front of a loud, electric crowd at Horne Arena, Lander volleyball delivered when it mattered most, outdueling Flagler in a dramatic five-set battle on Senior Night to claim a 3-2 victory (25-20, 15-25, 25-19, 17-25, 15-9) on Friday evening.

With postseason implications on the line and both teams fighting for seeding in a tight Peach Belt race, the night produced everything from long rallies to emotional swings, and ultimately a defining home-court win for the Bearcats (18-8, 10-4 PBC).

Lander rode a massive performance from senior outside hitter Katie Miller, who powered the Bearcats with 25 kills, 14 digs, and six assists, taking over in key moments for Lander.

Right beside her was setter Enisilina Savelio, who delivered one of her most complete matches of the season. The junior posted her third triple-double of the season with 10 kills (.500), 36 assists, and 19 digs, while adding two service aces and three blocks — a true all-around spark that flipped tight moments in Lander's favor.

Middle blocker Karson Browning was also a difference-maker at the net, finishing with 10 kills and a team-high five blocks.

Lander opened strong, hitting .286 in the first set and controlling play late for a 25-20 win. Flagler responded sharply, using a .353 hitting performance in set two to even the match.

The Bearcats regained control in the third behind Miller's timely swings and a more efficient offensive rhythm, taking it 25-19. But Flagler refused to go away, replicating another .353 hitting set in the fourth to force a winner-take-all fifth.

In the decisive frame, the Bearcats locked in defensively. Lander held Flagler to a -.042 hitting percentage while converting at a .333 clip on the other side.

With 221 fans filling Horne Arena, the energy of Senior Night played a significant role. Every rally grew louder, and the home crowd erupted down the stretch as Lander closed out the final points.

With the win, Lander stays firmly in the hunt for the No. 1 seed in the Peach Belt Tournament. The scenario remains tight — Lander must sweep the weekend series with Flagler and will be watching Saturday's Augusta–USC Aiken result closely.

The Bearcats and Saints square off again Saturday at 3 p.m. in Horne Arena for a rematch with major PBC implications on the line.
