Bearcats Fall in Five-Set Heartbreaker to Augusta

GREENWOOD - Lander volleyball suffered a tough setback Friday night, dropping a five-set battle to Augusta inside Finis Horne Arena. The Bearcats stormed out to a two-set lead before the Jaguars rallied for a reverse sweep to take the Peach Belt Conference match 3-2 (20-25, 14-25, 25-15, 25-17, 15-7).

With the loss, Lander fell to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in league play, while Augusta improved to 12-2 and remained unbeaten in the Peach Belt at 3-0.

Katie Miller paced the Bearcats with 17 kills and 19 digs adding 21 points, while Enisilina Savelio was efficient on the attack with 10 kills on a .474 hitting percentage and 27 assists. Karson Browning also reached double figures with 10 kills and 13.5 points and added five blocks.

Amelia May anchored the defense yet again at the net with a team-high six blocks and contributed two aces, while Emmi Cheek led the back row with 20 digs and added two aces of her own.

Lander controlled the early momentum, hitting .273 in the second set while holding Augusta to a .081 clip to take a commanding 2-0 advantage. The Jaguars responded in the third, flipping the match behind a 25-15 win and never looking back. Augusta limited Lander to just .000 hitting percentages in the final two sets, closing the comeback with a 15-7 decision in the fifth.

Overall, Augusta outhit Lander .141 to .132 and tallied 54 kills compared to the Bearcats' 48.

Lander returns to action Saturday, Oct. 4, as it hosts the University of South Carolina Aiken in another Peach Belt showdown starting at 3 p.m. at Finis Horne Arena.
