Balanced Attack Leads Bearcats Past Flagler as All Five Starters Score in Double Figures

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Lander Bearcats (10-5, 5-3 PBC) controlled both ends of the floor, securing a 69-60 victory over Flagler College (8-9, 4-4 PBC) behind a balanced offensive performance that saw all five starters score in double figures. Lander shot efficiently from the field and controlled the game for nearly 87 percent of the contest, fending off a late Flagler push.

This is the first time all five starters have scored double figures since Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022, in the Bearcats 81-74 victory over Georgia Southwestern.

How it Happened

Lander wasted no time establishing control, shooting 57.1 percent (8-for-14) from the field and 50.0 percent (2-for-4) from deep in the opening period. Shcira Fowles made her presence felt early, dominating the glass with six first-quarter rebounds.

The pace slowed in the second as both teams struggled offensively. Lander shot just 30.8 percent (4-for-13), but Flagler failed to capitalize, managing only 31.3 percent (5-for-16) themselves. Despite the offensive lull, Lander's defensive rebounding and free-throw shooting helped them maintain a 35-29 halftime advantage.

The Bearcats also managed five blocks in the first half, including two from Ryan Elbert and Courtney Nesbitt. Despite an early 9-4 deficit, Lander closed the quarter on an 18-7 run to take a 22-16 lead.

Coming out of halftime, the Bearcats put on a defensive clinic. They held the Saints to just 12.5 percent shooting (2-for-16) from the field and an 0-for-7 mark from three-point range.

Meanwhile, Quadaija Langley found her rhythm, hitting a perfect 3-for-3 from deep on the night to help Lander extend their lead to 48-38 heading into the final quarter.

With the Saints making a late push, Lander responded with big-time shooting and clutch free throws. The Bearcats knocked down 75.0 percent from three (3-for-4) and went 12-for-16 from the line in the fourth.

Nesbitt, Fowles, and Langley combined to keep Lander comfortably ahead, with their largest lead of 17 points (57-40) coming with just over six minutes left. Despite a late three from Abby Smith for Flagler, Lander sealed the win at the free-throw line to take home the 69-60 victory.

Key Performers  Final Thoughts

"Games like these are tough- I call them "midweek miles" where you have a long trip in the middle of the week, and you have to find a way to lock in," stated Head Coach Colie Shelwick. "Our starting five all had double digits, and Shcira found her rhythm. They earned this win!"
