Women’s Basketball Drops Tough Road Game to No. 5 North Georgia, 90-75

Dahlonega, Ga. - The Lander Bearcats (8-4, 3-2 Peach Belt) faced a tough challenge on the road, falling 90-75 to the No. 5-ranked North Georgia Nighthawks (14-1, 4-1 Peach Belt). Despite the loss, the Bearcats fought hard against one of the top teams in the nation at the UNG Convocation Center.

How it Happened

Lander had a tough start as the Nighthawks' defense limited their offensive rhythm. Shcira Fowles led the Bearcats early, but North Georgia's balanced attack, fueled by 52.9 percent shooting, helped secure a 19-12 lead after the opening quarter.

Despite a strong offensive showing in the second quarter by North Georgia, Lander improved their shooting to 46.2 percent, with Quadaija Langley stepping up as a playmaker. The Bearcats worked hard to keep pace, but turnovers allowed the Nighthawks to build a 47-28 halftime lead.

The Bearcats came out with renewed energy in the third quarter, outscoring North Georgia 24-22. Fowles and Langley spearheaded the comeback attempt, with Lander capitalizing on fast-break opportunities and dominating from the free-throw line, hitting 83.3 percent of their attempts. Their fightback trimmed the deficit heading into the final frame.

In the final quarter, Lander continued to push, shooting a game-best 58.3 percent from the floor. Aliyah Bello added timely buckets, and Fowles delivered a strong finish. Although the Bearcats closed the gap, North Georgia's disciplined play and depth secured the win.

Despite the loss, strong takeaways include the Bearcats' fourth-quarter effort, which showcased their offensive potential. They shot a perfect 100 percent from beyond the arc (3-for-3) while also shooting 80 percent from the free-throw line.

Key Performers  Final Thoughts

"Props to North Georgia; they are a very good team, but during the first half, we didn't play up to our standard," stated Head Coach Nicole "Colie" Shelwick. I am very proud of how we made adjustments and won the second half. Quadaija, Shcira, and Aliyah are finding their niche; it's exciting to see their growth. Stick with us because our team is almost there, and we get a chance to play them again."

UP NEXT
The Bearcats hit the road again, traveling to Milledgeville, Ga., to take on the 9-6 Georgia College Bobcats. The matchup is set to tip off at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 in the Centennial Center.
