Volleyball Sweeps Tusculum in Season Opener

GREENWOOD - Lander University kicked off its 2024 season in dominant fashion with a commanding 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-21, 25-19) over Tusculum University at Horne Arena Thursday night. Tusculum, now 0-1, struggled throughout, posting a hitting percentage of just .024 compared to Lander's .156.

"That was a great way to start the season against a very quality opponent," said head coach Jeff Reynolds. "Tusculum is a team that you have to pay attention to, and I am just so proud of the way our kids played tonight."

Lander's offensive engine was fueled by standout performances from junior Katie Miller, who led the team with 13 kills and 15 digs, and senior Blondie Penaflor, who added 10 kills herself. The Bearcats' consistent serving—with 10 total aces—four from sophomore Sophia Schneider—helped keep Tusculum off-balance throughout the match. Sophomore setter Lauren Dow also played a key role, contributing 30 assists to keep the attack flowing.

Defensively, sophomore Andrea Crawford was rock-solid with a team-high 18 digs, while freshman Karson Browning led the blocking effort with five, helping stifle Tusculum's offense. Lander's relentless defense was vital, limiting Tusculum's hitting percentage on the night.

"Our defense was great tonight. Our middles and pins did a great job slowing down their attack," said Reynolds. "If we could have tracked blocked touches, we would have 100. That was a significant factor in tonight's game, along with the crowd. I have to give a big shout-out to our fans and their support. We love that."
