Bearcats Split Second Day of the Redderson Invitational

GREENWOOD - The Lander University volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday, Sept. 6, bringing its overall record to 2-1.

Match One
LU 3, NGU 2

Lander opened the day with a hard-fought five-set victory over North Greenville. The Bearcats displayed resilience and poise, overcoming a tight third-set loss to clinch the match.

The Bearcats started strong, taking the first set 25-19, powered by an impressive .519 attack percentage. Despite dropping the second and third sets (22-25, 25-27), Lander rallied to claim the fourth set 25-19 and the decisive fifth 15-11.

Katie Miller led the offensive charge for Lander with 22 kills, while Blondie Penaflor contributed 12 kills and a match-high and new season-high of 6 blocks. Lauren Dow was pivotal, recording 52 assists. Andrea Crawford's 22 digs anchored the Bearcats defense. North Greenville posed a challenge, but Lander's balanced play ultimately secured the victory.

Match Two
LU 1, FIT 3

In the second match of the day, Lander suffered their first loss of the season, falling 3-1 to Florida Tech. The Bearcats took the opening set 25-18 with solid hitting from Katie Miller, but Florida Tech responded, winning the following three sets 25-16, 25-14, and 25-21.

Lander struggled to maintain momentum after the first set, hitting a combined .108 for the match compared to Florida Tech's .221. Miller again led Lander with 15 kills and 17 digs, but the team couldn't overcome Florida Tech's 9 blocks and 50 kills, led by Cordelia Kearns (15 kills) and Tessa Mati (10 kills).

Despite the setback, Lander showed grit in both matches, with standout performances from their key players.
