Coach Reynolds Claims 200th Career Win; Bearcats Split the Day

Montevallo, Ala. - The Lander University volleyball team split the first day of the GSC/PBC Crossover with a win against Mississippi College and a loss to the University of Montevallo. The Bearcats bring their overall record to 8-2  on the season.

With the win against Mississippi College, head volleyball coach Jeff Reynolds celebrated a significant milestone in his distinguished career by claiming his 200th career win. Before arriving at Lander, Reynolds had already built an impressive legacy at Snow College in Utah, where he accumulated a remarkable 131-28 record, averaging an impressive 26.2 wins per season. His tenure at Snow cemented him as a proven winner, and his success has only continued at Lander.

With today's victory, Reynolds' overall record at Lander University now stands at 69-32, bringing his overall career total to an outstanding 200 wins and 60 losses. Since taking the helm at Lander, Reynolds has worked tirelessly to shape the volleyball program, building a team that thrives on discipline, teamwork, and relentless determination. His leadership has been instrumental in propelling the program forward, and this latest achievement is a testament to his dedication and strategic understanding.

This landmark day holds even greater significance as the match against Montevallo marks Reynolds' 100th game as head coach at Lander and the 100th match coached alongside his trusted assistant, Kathryn Settle. The partnership between Jeff and Kat has been a cornerstone of Lander's volleyball success. Together, they have forged a strong, cohesive coaching team, guiding their athletes with a shared vision and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Reflecting on these dual milestones—his 200th career win and the shared journey with Kat over 100 games—Reynolds expressed gratitude for the dedication of his players and staff and the unbreakable bond he and Kat have forged over the years.

Match Recaps

Match One
LU 2, UM 3

The Bearcats put up a valiant effort in their five-set showdown against Montevallo. After dropping the first two sets, the Bearcats bounced back with an impressive .519 hitting percentage in set three to take it 25-16, and they followed it up with a commanding 25-15 win in Set 4. Despite a hard-fought fifth set, Lander came up just short at 12-15. The Bearcats showed tremendous grit and will take the positives into their next match.

"Montevallo did a really nice job keeping us out of the system in the first two sets. I'm proud of how we fought back in the third and fourth set, but we made too many mistakes again in the fifth set," said Reynolds. "Hard to win those kinds of games when you can't maintain a level of consistency throughout an entire set."

Katie Miller led the team with 19 kills, and Karson Browning's nine blocks were a defensive highlight. Lander will take this experience into their next match, stronger and more determined.

"Karson Browning had a really nice match. I was really impressed with her performance. She played with a lot of poise and confidence and was a major reason we were able to compete in the third and fourth sets," said Reynolds.

Match Two
LU 3, MC 1

After a tough first match, Lander secured a dominant 3-1 victory over Mississippi College, improving to 7-2 on the season.

The Bearcats came out swinging, taking the first set 25-14 with a stellar .600 hitting percentage. They kept the momentum rolling in set two, winning 25-19.

"This was a great rebound game for us. After struggling earlier today in serve receive, coming back to pass .600 in the first set really set the tone," said Reynolds. "I'm proud of the group for working through some things and showing what we're capable of."

Although Mississippi College fought back to take set three, Lander regrouped to close the match with a convincing 25-16 victory in the fourth.

Katie Miller led with 18 kills, while Karson Browning added seven blocks. Lander's all-around performance highlighted their control throughout the match.

"I'm not sure I can think of a time when all of our back-row players had double-digit digs. Defensively, our block did a nice job, and our back row had a solid night," stated Reynolds.

UP NEXT
The Bearcats will wrap up play in the GSC/PBC Crossover with a match against the University of Alabama in Huntsville starting at 1:00 p.m. ET.
