Bearcats Hot Streak Continues with a Sweep over Virginia Union

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - Lander dominated Virginia Union in a straight-set victory (25-12, 25-16, 25-22) at the Hawks Athletic Center to wrap up the Chowan Tournament. The Bearcats head home 3-0 on the weekend, bringing their record to 7-1 overall.

Lander opened the match strong on offense, recording 14 kills and hitting at a .314 efficiency, while Virginia Union struggled with just seven kills and a .081 hitting percentage. Led by Blondie Penaflor's consistent attacks, Lander quickly gained control, capitalizing on Virginia Union's errors to secure the set comfortably at 25-12.

The second set saw more balance in play, though Lander still dominated. Virginia Union continued to face difficulty in attack efficiency, managing only a .038 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, Lander kept their momentum with 12 kills, staying solid defensively with strong digging from Madde Blake (12) and Andrea Crawford (11). The set ended 25-16 in favor of the Bearcats.

Virginia Union showed more fight in the third set, improving their hitting percentage to .294 and tallying 14 kills. However, Lander matched them with 17 kills, led by Katie Miller and Penaflor. Despite Virginia Union's late push, Lander held their ground, sealing the final set 25-22 to take the match 3-0.

Overall, Lander's balanced performance across all sets was key, with standout contributions from Penaflor, who tallied 11 kills, three aces, and two blocks, and Lauren Dow, who had 30 assists and four aces.
