Lander Dominates Doubleheader with Sweeps Over AUM and Chowan

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Lander University volleyball team put on a dominant display, securing back-to-back sweeps over Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.) (25-16, 25-12, 25-21) and Chowan University (25-18, 25-14, 25-10) on Friday, Sept. 13, at the Hawks Athletic Center in the first day of the Chowan Tournament. With these two wins, the Bearcats improved to 5-1 overall on the season.

Match One
LU 3, AUM 0

The Bearcats set the tone early in the match, delivering an efficient offensive performance with 11 kills and just one error, hitting .313 for the set. Katie Miller was key, contributing to the attack while AUM struggled with consistency, hitting .000. Lander's strong serving and front-line defense kept AUM off-balance, resulting in a comfortable 25-16 first-set win.

The second set saw Lander assert their dominance even more, holding AUM to a negative hitting percentage of -.143. Lander's block, led by Blondie Penaflor and Karson Browning, held AUM's attack, while Lauren Dow's three aces highlighted the Bearcats' impressive service game. The Bearcats capitalized on AUM's errors and cruised to a 25-12 victory.

In the third set, AUM fought back, posting their best offensive showing with 16 kills, but Lander's consistency proved too much. The Bearcats hit .333 in the set, with Miller and Madde Blake leading the offense. Despite AUM's effort to make it a closer contest, Lander maintained their composure and closed the match 25-21, sealing the sweep.

Miller led Lander with nine kills and seven digs, while L. Dow recorded 12 assists and six digs.

Match Two
LU 3, CU 0

Lander jumped out to an early lead in the first set, using a balanced attack with 12 kills and hitting .290 as a team. Katie Miller led the offense, while the Bearcats' defense forced Chowan into six errors and a .086 hitting percentage. Chowan managed nine kills, but Lander's efficient play allowed them to comfortably secure the set 25-18.

The second set saw Lander elevate their game, hitting a blistering .387 with only one error. Miller and Lauren Dow continued to make their presence felt, while Chowan struggled to keep up, committing six more errors and managing just eight kills. Lander's blocking and defense shut down any potential momentum from Chowan, cruising to a 25-14 victory.

Lander put the Hawks to bed with a clinical performance in the third set, hitting .348 while holding Chowan to a negative hitting percentage (-.259). The Bearcats' defense was impenetrable, forcing Chowan into 11 errors. Miller's service game was on fire with three aces, and Karson Browning dominated the net with four blocks. Chowan had no answers, and Lander rolled to a decisive 25-10 win to complete the sweep.

Miller led Lander with 13 kills and six digs, while Dow dished out 17 assists. The Bearcats' suffocating defense and efficient offense were too much for Chowan, who struggled throughout the match, hitting just -.022 as a team.
