GREENWOOD - Raquel Camuglia deposited a 0-1 pitch just to the right of the center field scoreboard to give the Lander Softball team an early 3-0 in their Peach Belt Conference series opener against the Flagler Saints but the visitors responded with 14 unanswered runs, including a ten-run second inning, take the first game of the series by a 14-5 score.
Lander dropped to 25-11 overall and 9-7 in league play while Flagler improved to 28-14 and 11-5 in Peach Belt play.
Flagler loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first but Bailey Pattison got the next two batters to fly out to escape with no damage.Â
Singles from
Saje Jones and
Emily Allen put two on for the aforementioned three-run homer by Camuglia to give Lander a 3-0 lead after one.
However, in the second inning, everything went sideways as a couple of controversial calls allowed the inning to continue and the Saints took advantage and plated ten runs to flip the game on its head completely. Flagler then plated three runs in the third and another in the fourth to make it 14 straight runs scored and put the game on the brink of ending early.
Lander tried to extend the game in the bottom of the fifth as Logan Coward and Abbie Behe each plated a run and looked to plate another but an 8-2 double play ended the game.
The two teams complete the series tomorrow as they play a doubleheader starting at noon.
