Bearcats Sweep Doubleheader vs Flagler to Take Series

GREENWOOD - After suffering a tough loss on Friday night, the Lander Softball team did what they have done all year and bounced back to take both games of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader over the Flagler Saints. Lander used a four-run fifth to pull away to take game one, 8-1 and then scored a run in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings of game two to win 3-0.

This was the fifth PBC doubleheader sweep in six series for Lander as they improved to 27-11 overall and 11-7 in league play. The Saints dropped to 28-16 and also are 11-7 in league play. Because of the series win, Lander holds the tiebreaker over Flagler should the teams be tied at the end of the season.

Game 1: Lander 8, Flagler 1
Flagler struck first with a lead-off solo shot in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. However, after that, Taylor Scott held the Saints to just one more hit the rest of the way, striking out five en route to her 11th win of the season.

Lander took the lead in the bottom of the third off a pair of RBI singles from Logan Coward and Gracie Derrick to grab a 2-1 lead after three innings of play.

Emily Allen stretched the lead to 4-1 in the fourth with a two-RBI double and Omahen added another run in the fifth to make it 5-1. Then Behe came into the game and put the game out of reach with her three-run shot to center.

Game 2: Lander 3, Flagler 0
Both teams were held scoreless through three and a half innings before the Bearcats took advantage of a Flagler error as Omahen plated the first run of the game on a fielder's choice to make it 1-0.

Allen doubled the lead in the fifth inning with a towering solo shot to center field to make it 2-0 and Behe added some more insurance in the sixth with an RBI single.

In the circle, Kamryn Akins was stellar as she picked up her first win of the season with seven runs of three-hit ball, only facing four batters over the minimum 21.

Up Next:
The Bearcats will take the week off from games before they travel to Americus, Ga. to take on the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes for a PBC series starting on Friday with a single game at 6:00 PM. The series concludes on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM.
