Lander Drops Series Finale to Columbus State

GREENWOOD - The Lander Softball team put up a five run fifth inning to come back from 5-1 down but seven runs in the last two innings by the Columbus State Cougars allowed them to come away with a 12-8 victory in the series finale of the team's Peach Belt Conference series.

Lander drops to 18-5 overall and 6-3 in PBC play while Columbus State improves to 14-11 and 7-2 in PBC play.

Gracie Derrick, Logan Coward, and Emily Allen each drove home two runs, the latter two each hit a solo home run as well.

The Cougars jumped out to a 5-1 lead by the fourth inning with Lander's lone run, and hit, at that point coming off the bat of Bella Angeli who hit an RBI double in the third to make it 4-1 at that point.

However, after being quiet the first three innings, the Bearcat bats came to life as Coward led off the inning with her solo shot, a no-doubter over the left field wall, to make it 5-2. After a pair of singles, Allen delivered her first RBI of the game with a single of her own to make it 5-3. After a flyout for the second out of the inning, Derrick cleared the bases with a two-RBI triple to tie the game at five a piece then Abbie Behe gave Lander the lead with a single to score Derrick and the Bearcats led 6-5 after four.

Taylor Scott kept the Cougars off the board in the fifth but the visitors found their response in the sixth as they scored four runs to take a 9-6 lead. Coward kept Lander in the game with an RBI single to bring it back to a two-run game but Columbus State took advantage of an error in the top of the seventh to score three more to take a 12-7 lead.

Allen hit a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh but that was all Lander could get.

The Lander Softball team hits the road this week as they travel to Carrollton, Georgia for a non-conference doubleheader against the West Georgia Wolves on Friday, March 15th. Game 1 is scheduled for a 3:00 PM first pitch.
