Bearcats Drop Season Opener to No. 14 Carson-Newman

GREENWOOD - The Lander University women's basketball team tipped off their season at home in Finis Horne Arena, but the No. 14 Carson-Newman Eagles proved to be too much, handing the Bearcats a 90-64 loss. Despite a packed crowd of 365 fans, early offensive struggles and late foul trouble set the tone of the game for Lander.

Carson-Newman took control from the start, surging to a 26-8 lead in the first quarter and forcing Lander into catch-up mode. The Bearcats began to find their footing in the second quarter, with Quadaija Langley and Trinity Thomas combining for 41 points to fuel the offense. Langley led with 22 points, shooting an impressive 10-of-12 from the free-throw line, while Thomas contributed 19 points and seven rebounds.

Turnovers, however, became a costly setback, as the Eagles capitalized with 29 points off Lander's mistakes. Shcira Fowles provided a strong defensive presence, leading Lander with nine rebounds, including eight on the defensive end.

In the third quarter, Lander showed resilience as Thomas continued to add to her scoring and helped the Bearcats improve their shooting to 45% from the field. However, Carson-Newman's balanced offense, led by Jennifer Sullivan's 20 points, maintained the pressure and extended their lead with a 21-point quarter.

Lander fought hard in the fourth quarter, but foul trouble became an obstacle, with four players fouling out. Carson-Newman's depth allowed them to keep control, and Lander ultimately couldn't bridge the gap, ending with a 90-64 loss.

As a team, Lander hit 85.3 percent (18-51) of its shots from the field, including 5-16 (.313) three-pointers. The Bearcats also knocked down 23-of-33 free throws. Lander did control the boards, winning the rebounding battle 48-43.
