Women’s Basketball Secures First Win of the Season Under Head Coach Shelwick

Junior forward Shcira Fowles notched her first double-double of the season, delivering an impressive 23 points and 20 rebounds.

GREENWOOD - The Lander Bearcats claimed their first victory of the season with a commanding 70-54 win over Lenoir-Rhyne, marking a milestone for Head Coach Nicole "Colie" Shelwick, who celebrated her first career victory at Lander.

Lenoir-Rhyne came into the weekend receiving votes in the most recent WBCA Preseason Coaches Poll, which highlighted just how big this win was for the Bearcats after they opened their season with a loss to the No. 14/8 Carson-Newman Eagles the night before.

"Our team showed incredible resilience and heart, bouncing back from a tough loss with focus and determination," said Head Coach Shelwick. "It's not easy to start a season with two teams that have votes in the national polls."

The Bearcats started with a steady approach, closing the first quarter tied at 9-9, but found their footing in the second, outscoring Lenoir-Rhyne 16-10.

Lander exploded in the third quarter after a tightly contested first half that ended 25-19, outscoring Lenoir-Rhyne 31-16.

This decisive surge was spearheaded by Shcira Fowles, who had a standout game, recording a double-double with an impressive 23 points and 20 rebounds. Fowles' dominance in the paint and key contributions from Quadaija Langley and Abby Carter allowed Lander to pull away and secure the win.

Langley scored 13 points and added six rebounds, while Carter chipped in with 10 points, converted on three of her six field goals, and contributed defensively with a steal.

Another key contributor, Courtney Nesbitt, had nine points and a three-pointer, while Trinity Thomas rounded out the starting five's scoring with eight points and three defensive rebounds.
Lander's defense was sharp, forcing 17 turnovers and limiting Lenoir-Rhyne's shooting to just 20 percent from beyond the arc.

As a team, Lander hit 44.1 percent (30-68) of its shots from the field, including 8-11 (.727) from the free-throw line. Lander dominated the boards, outrebounding the Bears 49-26.
"I am so proud of our ladies and excited to share this first win with them," said Shelwick.
