Lander Edges Mars Hill in 48-47 Thriller on Nesbitt's Clutch Jumper

GREENWOOD - In a thrilling showdown at Horne Arena, the Lander Bearcats edged out the Mars Hill Lions, 48-47, handing the Lions their first loss of the season in heart-stopping fashion. With the clock winding down, Courtney Nesbitt nailed a pull-up jump shot, lifting Lander to a 2-1 record and handing Mars Hill their first loss of the season.

"We found out the day before the game there would be a big change in how we have to operate. The way this team has overcome this challenge that was thrown their way is inspiring," stated Head Coach Nicole "Colie" Shelwick

The matchup was a gritty, defensive affair from the beginning, with neither team shooting above 30 percent. Lander, however, found their rhythm when it mattered most. Trinity Thomas led the Bearcats with 12 points, sinking two key three-pointers, and Shcira Fowles controlled the boards with 11 rebounds, adding nine points of her own. Abby Carter added eight points, going 4-for-5 from the field.

Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm as defenses dictated the pace early on. The Lions had several chances, but their shooting struggles continued throughout. They finished just 27.9 percent (17-for-61) from the field and 18.8 percent (3-for-16) from beyond the arc.

Lander took advantage of every opportunity, especially down the stretch, keeping their composure through nine lead changes and multiple ties.

Final Thoughts

"Today's win was true resilience, grit, and determination, just a testament to their character. Abby locked down their leading scorer, holding her to just six points; Trinity filled every role we needed today, and Courtney trusted herself right up to the final buzzer. I couldn't be prouder of how they keep pushing forward," said Shelwick.
