Lander Bearcats Sweep UNC Pembroke Braves in a Three-Set Road Victory

Pembroke, N.C. - The Lander volleyball team defeated UNC Pembroke in three sets (27-25, 25-18, and 25-14) on Tuesday afternoon. This was the first road match the Bearcats have had in 31 days. With this non-conference win, the Bearcats improve to 13-3 overall (2-0 PBC) and extend their win streak to six.

How it Happened

Set 1: Lander edged out UNC Pembroke in a thrilling first set, winning 27-25. The Bearcats showed resilience as they faced a strong offensive push from the Braves. Lander capitalized on every opportunity, registering 19 kills with a more efficient .250 hitting percentage. Katie Miller led the charge with eight kills in the first set and Lauren Dow's quick reflexes in setting up the attack helped Lander hold off a late surge from UNC Pembroke, clinching the set with a clutch kill.

Set 2: With the momentum from the opening set, Lander elevated their performance in Set 2, cruising to a 25-18 victory. The Bearcats tightened their defense, limiting the Braves' attacking efficiency to just .136 while improving their own to .286. Once again, Miller's powerful swings led the way, while Breana Pelbath and Madde Blake chipped in with a solid offensive effort. Miller and Dow's coordination was pivotal, as Dow racked up 32 assists in the match, continually outmaneuvering UNC Pembroke's blockers.

Set 3: The third set was all Lander, as they wrapped up the match with a decisive 25-14 victory. The Bearcats' defense continued to shine, holding the Braves to a meager .108 hitting percentage. Lander's attack was not only consistent but nearly flawless, with just two errors in the set and a .303 hitting percentage. Strong serving played a role, with Blake registering three service aces. Lander's defense at the net, led by Dow and Pelbath, shut down any attempt at a Braves' comeback, sealing the match in dominant fashion.

Key Performances
  • Katie Miller (17) and Madde Blake (10) each registered double-digit kills in the match
  • Madde Blake also secured three aces in the match, along with 13 digs
  • Lauren Dow once again put up big numbers, ending the day with 32 assists, 14 digs, and three blocks
  • Katie Miller has proven time and time again that she can do it all, leading the team in kills and digs (15) against the Braves

Final Thoughts

Head Coach Jeff Reynolds acknowledged that the team played with a great deal of confidence, which showed as they took control of the match. "UNC Pembroke is an excellent volleyball team. They are one of those teams that can get you if you don't come ready to play, especially here in their gym," said Coach Reynolds. "They did a nice job in the first set. We had to work hard to overcome that home-court advantage. Once we could come from behind and get the victory in the first set, the momentum shifted in our favor."
